Relay protection consists of seven parts

Relay protection systems consist of seven key parts that work together to detect faults and isolate electrical equipment safely.1. Sensing ElementsThese are the primary components that detect abnormal electrical quantities such as current, voltage, frequency, or impedance. They typically include current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (PTs), which step down high system values to measurable levels for the relay to process .2. Relay Logic / Decision UnitThis part interprets the signals from the sensing elements and determines whether a fault condition exists. It can be electromechanical, static, or numerical (microprocessor-based), depending on the relay type . The logic applies settings like pickup values and time delays to decide when to operate.3. Pick-up and Reset MechanismThe pick-up defines the threshold at which the relay activates, while the reset ensures the relay returns to its normal state after the fault is cleared. This ensures selective and reliable operation .4. Trip Output / Operating ContactsOnce a fault is detected, the relay closes or opens its contacts to send a trip signal. This output is the interface between the relay and the circuit breaker or other interrupting devices .5. Trip CircuitThe trip circuit carries the relay's output signal to the circuit breaker coil, enabling the breaker to interrupt the faulted section. It may be AC or DC powered and includes wiring, fuses, and auxiliary contacts .6. Circuit Breaker / Interrupting DeviceAlthough not part of the relay itself, the circuit breaker is an essential part of the protection system. It physically isolates the faulted section when the relay sends a trip signal, preventing equipment damage and maintaining system stability .7. Auxiliary and Communication SystemsThese include alarm circuits, supervision, and communication links for remote monitoring, coordination with upstream/downstream relays, and event recording. They enhance reliability and allow operators to respond to faults effectively .SummaryThe seven parts of relay protection—sensing elements, relay logic, pick-up/reset mechanism, trip output, trip circuit, circuit breaker, and auxiliary/communication systems—form a complete chain that ensures fast, selective, and reliable fault detection and isolation in power systems. Each part is critical, and a weakness in any link can compromise the protection scheme .

Electromechanical relays can be classified into several different types as follows: "Armature"-type relays have a pivoted lever supported on a hinge or knife-edge pivot, which carries a moving contact. These relays may work on either alternating or direct current, but for alternating current, a shading coil on the pole is used to maintain contact force throughout the alternating current cycle. Because the air gap between t
