Cobalt alloys can be accurately analyzed using Optical Emission Spectrometry (OES) or X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectrometers, providing fast, precise, and reliable elemental composition data.Optical Emission Spectrometry (OES)OES spectrometers, such as the SPECTROMAXx LMX10, are widely used for cobalt and its alloys. These instruments employ arc/spark excitation to vaporize a small portion of the metal sample, producing light at characteristic wavelengths for each element. Modern OES systems use CMOS detectors and advanced optics to cover the full wavelength range, allowing selection of optimal analytical lines and reference lines for accurate quantification. OES provides high repeatability, reproducibility, and sensitivity, making it ideal for process control and quality assurance in industrial settings. It is particularly effective for detecting trace elements and micro-inclusions in cobalt alloys, with fast measurement times and low operational costs due to reduced consumables and easy maintenance (SPECTRO) .X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF)XRF spectrometers, such as Bruker METAL-QUANT and Malvern Panalytical Zetium, are non-destructive techniques that analyze the elemental composition by measuring fluorescent X-rays emitted from the sample when irradiated with a primary X-ray beam. XRF is suitable for rapid, direct analysis of major and minor elements in cobalt alloys, including cobalt, nickel, tungsten, and other alloying elements. Wavelength-dispersive XRF (WDXRF) provides high resolution and sensitivity, resolving spectral overlaps in complex alloys. Solid alloy samples are typically polished to a flat surface to ensure reproducible results.
