Optical modules are defined by parameters such as wavelength, transmission rate, distance, power levels, receiver sensitivity, and form factor, which determine their performance and compatibility in fiber optic networks.Key Parameters1. Central Wavelength: The wavelength of light used by the module, measured in nanometers (nm). Common types include 850nm for multimode fiber (short distance, low cost), 1310nm for single-mode fiber (medium distance, moderate loss), and 1550nm for single-mode fiber (long distance, low loss) . 2. Transmission Rate: The data rate the module supports, measured in bits per second (bps). Typical rates are 155Mbps, 1.25Gbps, 2.5Gbps, 10Gbps, and higher for modern modules. Transmission rates are often backward compatible . 3. Transmission Distance: The maximum distance the optical signal can travel without amplification, measured in kilometers (km). Multimode modules typically reach up to 550m, while single-mode modules can reach 15km, 40km, 80km, or 120km depending on wavelength and fiber type . 4. Optical Power Levels:Average Transmit Power: The typical optical power output from the transmitter under normal conditions, measured in dBm or mW .Receiver Sensitivity: The minimum optical power the receiver can detect while maintaining a specified Bit Error Rate (BER), usually BER = 10^-12 .Overload/Saturation Power: The maximum optical power the receiver can tolerate without signal distortion or damage . 5. Extinction Ratio: The ratio of optical power when transmitting a logical "1" versus a "0", measured in dB. It indicates the ability of the laser to distinguish between high and low signals, affecting signal quality . 6. Form Factor and Connector Type: Physical size and interface type, such as SFP, SFP+, QSFP28, OSFP, and connectors like LC Duplex, SC Duplex, MPO/MTP, which determine compatibility with switches, routers, and fiber cabling . 7. Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM): Some modules include real-time monitoring of parameters like operating voltage, temperature, transmitted and received optical power, and laser bias current, ensuring reliable operation and interoperability . Understanding these parameters is essential for selecting optical modules that meet network requirements for bandwidth, distance, and reliability, while ensuring compatibility with existing infrastructure.
