Fiber optic cable tuned to multimode

Multi-mode optical fiber is a type of mostly used for communication over short distances, such as within a building or on a campus. Multi-mode links can be used for data rates up to 800 Gbit/s. Multi-...

Fiber optic cable tuned to multimode

Multimode fiber optic cables (MMF) transmit multiple light modes through a larger core, making them ideal for short- to medium-distance data transmission in buildings, campuses, and data centers.OverviewMultimode fiber (MMF) has a larger core diameter, typically 50–100 micrometers, allowing multiple light modes to propagate simultaneously. This design simplifies alignment and installation, reduces system costs, and supports high data rates up to 100 Gbps over distances generally ranging from 300 to 550 meters, depending on the fiber type (OM3, OM4, OM5) and network speed . MMF commonly uses LEDs or VCSELs as light sources, which are less expensive than the lasers used in single-mode fiber .Types of Multimode FiberMultimode fibers are classified according to the ISO/IEC 11801 standard into OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, and OM5:OM1: Core diameter 62.5 µm, orange jacket, LED light source, supports 10 Gbps up to 33 meters, commonly used for 100 Mbps Ethernet .OM2: Core diameter 50 µm, orange jacket, LED light source, supports 10 Gbps up to 82 meters, often used for 1 Gbps Ethernet .OM3: 50 µm core, laser-optimized, supports 10 Gbps up to 300 meters, widely used in modern data centers .OM4: 50 µm core, improved modal bandwidth, supports 10–100 Gbps over longer distances than OM3, suitable for high-speed LANs .OM5: Wideband multimode fiber (WB-MMF), supports short-wavelength division multiplexing (SWDM), optimized for 40–400 Gbps using multiple wavelengths, released in 2016 .ApplicationsMMF is primarily used for short-distance communication, such as:Intra-building networksCampus networksData center interconnectsFiber to the desktop or telecom enclosuresHigh optical power applications like laser welding or spectroscopy equipment .Advantages and ConsiderationsCost-effective: Lower-cost transceivers and light sources compared to single-mode fiber .Ease of installation: Larger core simplifies alignment and handling .Shorter reach: Modal dispersion limits maximum transmission distance, making MMF unsuitable for long-haul networks .High data rates: Supports up to 100 Gbps over short distances, sufficient for most enterprise and data center applications .Comparison with Single-Mode FiberFeatureMultimode Fiber (MMF)Single-Mode Fiber (SMF)Core diameter50–100 µm8–9 µmLight modesMultipleSingleDistanceShort (up to ~550 m)Long (up to 100 km or more)Light sourceLED, VCSELDML, EML lasersCostLowerHigherApplicationsLAN, data centers, campus networksLong-haul, metro, telecom networks Multimode fiber remains a key choice for cost-effective, high-speed, short-range networking, while single-mode fiber is preferred for long-distance and high-bandwidth applications.
