Optical fiber cables with metallic components must be properly grounded along tracks to ensure safety, prevent equipment damage, and mitigate lightning or electrostatic hazards.When Grounding is RequiredOptical fiber cables are generally dielectric and do not carry electrical current, so fully non-metallic cables do not require grounding . However, many track-installed fiber cables include metallic elements such as steel armor, copper strength members, or metallic messenger wires. These components must be grounded to prevent electric shock, equipment damage, and fire hazards, especially in outdoor or exposed environments like railway tracks . Additionally, any metallic conduit or tray carrying fiber cables must also be grounded .Grounding MethodsSelect a Grounding Point: Ground the cable as close as possible to the equipment or entry point to the track-side cabinet. The grounding point should be stable, dry, and corrosion-resistant .Use a Grounding Wire: Connect the metallic components of the cable to the grounding system using a dedicated copper wire with sufficient cross-sectional area to ensure low impedance. Copper is preferred for its conductivity and corrosion resistance .Install Bonding Hardware: Use UL-listed bonding clamps or grounding clips to attach the grounding wire to the metallic armor or strength members.
