Optical switches can be interconnected in multi-stage networks using 2x2 switch elements, staged to scale input-output ports while supporting dynamic routing and high bandwidth.Multi-Stage InterconnectionTo build a scalable optical switch network, multiple 2x2 optical switch elements are interconnected in stages. For an N-input, N-output system, the number of stages required is calculated as 2(log₂N)−1, with N/2 switches per stage. This approach allows the network to handle larger port counts efficiently while maintaining low insertion loss and high isolation .Example: 4x4 and 8x8 Switch Systems4x4 system: Two stages of 2x2 switches can be arranged to connect four inputs to four outputs.8x8 system: Requires three stages of 2x2 switches, with four switches in the first stage, two in the second, and one in the final stage .Port Configuration and ControlEach switch element should have clearly defined input and output ports.
