Single-mode optical fibers are primarily coated with UV-cured acrylates, polyimides, silicones, and specialty polymers or inorganic materials for protection and performance in various environments.Primary CoatingsThe primary coating is applied directly to the glass fiber to protect it from mechanical stress and microbending. The most common material is UV-cured acrylate, which accounts for over 99% of telecom fiber coatings due to its excellent mechanical and optical properties, flexibility, and ease of application during the fiber draw process (Fiber Optic Center) . Acrylate coatings are available in soft inner layers to cushion the fiber and hard outer layers to provide additional protection and improve handling (OFS) .Secondary CoatingsThe secondary coating or buffer layer provides extra mechanical strength and environmental protection. Materials include hard acrylates, silicones, and thermoplastics such as ETFE, PFA, or PEEK. Silicones are soft and dampen compression-induced attenuation but require additional buffering for protection (OFS) . Secondary coatings also help maintain fiber integrity in harsh conditions and facilitate connectorization.High-Temperature and Specialty CoatingsFor applications in high-temperature or harsh environments, fibers may use polyimide coatings, which can withstand continuous temperatures up to 300°C and short-term exposure up to 400°C (Newport, Thorlabs) . Polyimide coatings are chemically resistant, vacuum compatible, and suitable for aerospace, military, oil and gas, and medical applications. High-temperature acrylates are also used for continuous operation up to +150°C (Newport) .Specialty and Inorganic CoatingsSome fibers require specialty coatings for sensing, extreme environments, or enhanced optical performance. These include carbon, metals, nitrides, sapphire, and complex polymer composites that may incorporate dyes, fluorescent materials, or nanomaterials (Fiber Optic Center) .
