Fabrication of SC Cold Joints

Fabrication of SC Cold Joints

SC cold joint fabrication involves creating reliable, pre-engineered connections in cables, conveyor belts, or fiber optics without heat, using specialized kits or adhesives to ensure mechanical and electrical integrity.Power Cable Cold JointsFor SC-type polymeric power cables (e.g., 3M SC145-II/SS145-II), cold joints are designed for voltages from 69 kV to 145 kV. The joint kits include all necessary materials for splicing copper or aluminum conductors, excluding preparation tools. Installation requires following the manufacturer's instructions, including proper conductor heating and thermal cycling to ensure insulation integrity. The joints undergo multiple thermal cycles and voltage tests to confirm no internal voids or displacement of compounds, ensuring long-term reliability and safety in high-voltage applications .Conveyor Belt Cold JointsIn industrial applications, SC2000-type cold vulcanizing adhesives are used to bond rubber to rubber, rubber to fabric, or fabric to fabric. The process involves:Surface preparation: Deburring, cleaning, and drying the surfaces to be bonded.Mixing: Combining the two-component adhesive (B-part into A-part) and stirring quickly.Application and curing: Pouring the mixed adhesive onto the surfaces. Initial curing occurs in about 2 hours at room temperature, with full bonding strength achieved after 24 hours. These adhesives are non-flammable, resistant to aging, and provide high mechanical strength, making them suitable for conveyor belt repair and industrial bonding applications .Fiber Optic Cold JointsFor fiber optic systems, cold joints or quick connectors allow fast, tool-free splicing. The process uses pre-polished ferrules and mechanical splicing mechanisms:The incoming fiber is inserted into a V-shaped groove and clamped mechanically. The wedge clip is removed to secure the fiber.Termination is completed in minutes, providing low-loss, high-stability connections suitable for FTTH networks. This method eliminates the need for heat or fusion splicing, improving installation speed and reducing complexity .Key ConsiderationsMaterial compatibility: Ensure the adhesive or joint kit matches the conductor, cable insulation, or substrate.Temperature and curing: Follow manufacturer-specified temperature ranges and curing times to achieve optimal mechanical and electrical performance.Testing: High-voltage or mechanical testing may be required to verify joint integrity.Safety: Use personal protective equipment and follow handling instructions for adhesives and high-voltage components. SC cold joint fabrication provides a reliable, efficient method for connecting cables, belts, or fibers without heat, ensuring durability, safety, and performance across electrical and industrial applications.
