Optical module transceivers interconnect by converting electrical signals to optical signals at the transmitting end, transmitting through fiber, and reconverting to electrical signals at the receiving end.Working Principle of InterconnectionOptical transceiver modules function as photoelectric conversion devices. At the transmitting end, the module receives electrical signals from a host device, which are processed by internal driver circuits and then modulate a laser diode (LD) or light-emitting diode (LED) to generate optical signals of the corresponding bit rate . These optical signals travel through fiber optic cables to the receiving module. At the receiving end, the optical signals are captured by a photodetector diode in the module, converted back into electrical signals, amplified, and sent to the host device . This process ensures high-speed, reliable data transmission between devices such as switches, servers, or base stations.Physical and Electrical InterfacesOptical modules typically have two interfaces:Electrical Interface: Connects to the host system (e.g., switch or server) via a circuit board connector. Modern modules follow standards like SFP, SFP+, QSFP+, CFP, and use retimed digital or analog interfaces depending on the module type .Optical Interface: Connects to the fiber optic cable using standardized connectors (LC, MPO, etc.). Dust caps and boots protect the optical interface and ensure secure connections . The gold finger pins on the module ensure proper power-up sequencing and signal integrity, with longer pins for ground, medium-length for power, and shortest for data signals .Types of Optical ModulesModules can be transmit-only, receive-only, or transceivers (both transmit and receive). Common packages include SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP+, QSFP28, supporting speeds from 100 Mbps to 100 Gbps .
