Fireproof sealing area for cable trays

Fireproof sealing area for cable trays

Cable trays must be fireproof sealed at all penetrations through walls, floors, slabs, and electrical shafts using appropriate firestopping materials to prevent fire and smoke spread.Key Locations for Fireproof Sealing1. Wall Penetrations: Cable trays passing through walls, including fire-rated walls, must have all gaps around the tray and cables sealed with firestop materials such as intumescent wraps, firestop putty, or fire-resistant mineral wool. Wall boxes on opposite sides of a fire barrier should be separated by at least 24 inches, and openings larger than 0.125 inches must be plaster-sealed and filled with firestop compound to maintain fire integrity . 2. Floor and Slab Penetrations: When cable trays pass through floors or slabs, openings must be tightly sealed with firestopping materials. A fire-support plate should be installed at the top of the penetration, and a waterstop of at least 50 mm is recommended at floor level. Firestop packs should be placed in sequence, with gaps between packs and cables not exceeding 1 cm² and packing thickness not less than 24 cm . 3. Electrical Shafts and Panels: Cable trays entering electrical panels, cabinets, or shafts require fireproof sealing around the entry points. Openings should be sealed internally and externally, ensuring no visible cracks or voids. Fire-rated boards, firestop mastic, or fire-resistant mineral wool are suitable materials .Recommended Fireproof MaterialsIntumescent wraps or tapes: Swell under heat to fill gaps around trays and cables .Firestop putty or pillows: Moldable and conformable to irregular openings, suitable for both new and retrofit installations .Firestop mastic or caulk: Intumescent or latex-based, applied with a caulking gun to seal edges and gaps .Fire-resistant mineral wool or boards: Used for larger openings or as backing plates before sealing .Installation ConsiderationsEnsure openings are clean and free of debris before sealing.Maintain proper sequence: install trays → route cables → apply firestop materials.Cover plates should be square, evenly painted, and dimensionally consistent. For large openings, install a fire-resistant backing plate before sealing.Periodically inspect fireproofed trays for coating integrity, corrosion, or damage to maintain long-term effectiveness .Maintenance and InspectionRoutine checks should confirm that tray connections are firm, aligned, and grounded. Fireproof coatings and seals must remain intact, and any signs of corrosion, deformation, or compromised firestop material should be addressed immediately . By sealing cable trays at all wall, floor, slab, and shaft penetrations with appropriate fireproof materials, you ensure compliance with fire safety standards and maintain the integrity of electrical installations in case of fire.
